It is shameful that tomorrow, a roundtable is being prepared in the Croatian Parliament, organized by the House and National Unification (DOMiNO) and Croatian Sovereignists' Club of Representatives, entitled "A Scientific Approach to Researching Jasenovac Victims."
Researchers Nikola Banić and Igor Vukić, as well as literary historian Slobodan Prosperov Novak, who for years have minimized the number of victims and denied the crimes committed by the Ustaša in Jasenovac, have been announced as participants. Representatives of the organizers have clearly stated in media interviews that questioning and relativizing the number of victims is one of the goals of the event, which we find particularly alarming and offensive to all victims, survivors, and their families and descendants.
At a gathering about a scientific approach, those who should primarily be speaking are the curators of the Jasenovac Memorial Site, who have been researching the fate of the victims for decades, and relevant historians who have been studying Jasenovac for many years, such as Professor Ivo Goldstein or Professor Goran Hutinec.
We believe that in the building of the legislative authority of the Republic of Croatia there should be no place for revisionist gatherings. By organizing such a round table, further support is given to revisionism and the rehabilitation of the NDH (Independent State of Croatia) and the Ustaša movement, thereby deepening the already strong social polarization within Croatian society.
When the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, Gordan Jandroković, spoke in 2024 on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, he mentioned Jasenovac among the sites symbolic of inhuman crimes — yet now he passively observes as revisionists use the honorable premises of the Croatian Parliament.
It is also concerning that the Public Institution Jasenovac Memorial Site, which has for almost two years been led by acting director Sara Lustig, has not protested against the holding of this revisionist gathering in the Croatian Parliament.
We call on representatives of the Croatian Parliament and the Jasenovac Memorial Site (JUSP Jasenovac) to stand up against the misuse of an institution that represents all citizens of the Republic of Croatia.
