Literature as a bridge to understanding, change and reconciliation
We are pleased to present the new digital interactive handbook Stories Against Silence, developed within the framework of the project Literature as a Bridge: Empowering Youth Workers for Reconciliation, Conflict Prevention, and Promotion of EU Values. The handbook introduces an innovative and inspiring approach to youth work, using literature and storytelling as powerful tools for peacebuilding, fostering empathy, and strengthening intercultural dialogue.
The publication was created through the collaboration of the Group “Hajde da…” and regional partners – Association “Prijateljice”, the Centre for Peace Osijek, and the Public Institution “Mladi zmaji”. It is also one of the outcomes of the long-term programme The Book Makes It Visible, which opens space for dialogue on important social issues through various initiatives.
Starting from the idea that literature encourages young people to reflect and share personal experiences, Stories Against Silence combines literary analysis with youth empowerment. It is intended for youth workers, trainers, and young people themselves, particularly those working with or belonging to marginalized groups.
Rather than offering ready-made solutions, the handbook provides guidance, inspiration, and practical methods for designing workshops that create space for discussions on topics such as peace, conflict, identity, and social inequalities. Through prose and poetry, participants are encouraged to see the world from different perspectives, fostering imagination, empathy, and the ability to step into someone else’s shoes.
Stories Against Silence is a valuable resource for everyone who believes in the power of words to connect people, promote understanding, and inspire change. We invite you to explore it, use it in your work, and join us in continuing to build spaces of dialogue, trust, and solidarity.
The handbook is available in digital format and open to all who wish to harness the power of literature in their work with young people as a tool for reconciliation and social transformation.
