Fight Hate, Foster Understanding: Engage in the Battle Against Hate Speech Online in HateOUT! Game
The LEAD-Online project (Learn, Engage, Act: Digital Tools to Prevent and Counter Hate Speech Online,) is very happy to announce the release of the Hate Out! Game. HateOut! is an immersive and educational game that challenges players to recognise significant traits of Hate Speech Online (HSO), understand their impact on victims, and employ counter-narratives to respond using constructive dialogue and messaging. Through this experience, players not only combat hate speech but also contribute to the building of knowledge and the formation of a community of practice, fostering a safer and more inclusive digital environment.
The game features nine distinct online hate speech scenarios, inspired by real-life incidents, carefully avoiding victimising specific groups. Each scenario offers a brief description of the situation and introduces the main characters. Players must make choices from a list of actions in response. After the selection of their action, the player gets feedback regarding the effect of their choice.

To ensure ethical and responsible development, we consulted with school counsellors and HSO experts to safeguard privacy rights and prevent potential negative emotional impacts on participants.
The project LEAD-Online addresses the need to strengthen critical thinking and digital & media literacy skills in young people, as causally linked to the low levels of reporting and the “normalisation” of hate speech online (HSO). The project is funded under CERV-2021-EQUAL and it is carried out by 7 partners from 7 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Romania).
